University of Trento International opportunities for students:

Summer School on China Studies Trandition and Innovation

As Confucius pointed out, the age of 40 is the age of maturity and doubtless. China, after 40 years of Policy of Reform and Opening-up, is trying to develop its own identity by looking at its tradition and by addressing the challenges of the future. On one side we have the Confucian values, on the other side we have the needs of the digital society. Current Chinese trends are analyzed within the frame of economical, legal and cultural phenomenon and by emphasizing their traditional/historical and modern elements. The summer school will provide participants with an opportunity to better understanding current trends in China and to develop the necessary methodological skills to address China’s issues.

Period

from 7 to 20 July 2019

Contents

The selected topics are: the new E-Commerce Law, the draft of the future Civil Law Code to be adopted in 2020, the Supreme People’s Court Case Guidance System, the Fundamental Characters of Chinese Culture Today, the Experience of Modernization and Reform, the Importance and Role of Chinese Language, Sharing Economy, Artificial Intelligence, Law and Virtue, China in a Global Context.

Leading experts on China Studies and representatives of Chinese political, economic and cultural spheres (the list of Guest Speaker is available here Guest speakers) will analyse current Chinese trends within the frame of economical, legal and cultural phenomenon and by emphasizing their traditional/historical and modern elements, providing participants with an opportunity to develop the necessary methodological skills to address China’s issues.

Each presentation, beside the fundamental theoretical knowledge, will analyse concrete cases and practices. Guest Speakers are hopefully going to contribute to strengthening a proper and friendly academic atmosphere and promote further collaborations.
Participants will be introduced to some of the successful business stories in Trentino. These meetings will open discussion about how to adapt local realities to Chinese challenges.

Aim

The aim is to analyze current trends in China’s developments. China is striving to create an alternative social, economic and legal model, which seeks to be not the mere emulation of Western models but the inheritance and enhancement of Chinese outstanding tradition’s values. This is the main task of Chinese government and Communist Party’s agenda. The first attempt occurred during the last decades of the Qing dynasty and led to the perish of the empire and the refusal of the tradition. Today, after 40 years since the Policy of Reform and Opening-up, characterized by the study and importation of Western ideas models goods, and by a rapid growth, China is trying to stand as a mature country and to define its identity. As Confucius pointed out, the age of 40 is the age of maturity and doubtless. China is trying to develop its own identity by looking at its tradition and by addressing the challenges of the future. On one side we have the Confucian values, on the other side we have the needs of the digital society.

Trentino-Alto Adige has become one of the richest regions in natural and geographic wonderland. The leisure part of the Summer School will bring participants to explore the amazing landscapes of this mountain region, where Italian and German language and culture live side by side.

Moreover, Trento is the birthplace of Martino Martini, acclaimed as the father of Chinese geographical science, and hosts the homonymous Centre aiming at developing cultural relations between Europe, China and East Asia (https://www.martinomartinicenter.org/).
